A DVLA survey has suggested that 50% of motorists were not aware of the minimum eyesight standards required to hold a driving licence.
Drivers must be able to read a number plate from 20m (65ft) away.
The survey found only half of drivers knew about this and the fact that they should regularly self-check and that this is in fact a legal requirement!
Five car lengths is roughly the 20m distance and anyone who cannot 'pass' this test is advised to visit their optician as soon as possible.
Drivers over the age of 70 must actively make a declaration every three years that they are fit to drive - but do not actually have to pass a test.
